The new lights received the tick of approval at Crathern Park on Friday night, but it was the home side’s finals and premiership aspirations which earned an even bigger boost. Centrals Trinity Bulldogs stretched the gap on fourth and fifth on the Cairns AFL ladder with a demolition of the South Cairns Cutters to the tune of 92 points.
The Cutters early season progression took a hammering as they were blown away by a rampaging Bulldogs outfit, much to the pleasure of the healthy crowd. A first-quarter blitz from the Bulldogs laid the platform for the win, booting four goals to one despite kicking against the breeze.
The Cutters looked anything but finals contenders, comprehensively beaten in the intensity stakes, but most notably, the commitment inside their own forward 50 was most disappointing. The ball left their attack with consummate ease – and without any scoreboard pressure.
Conversely, the Bulldogs forwards doubled their opponent’s total score with goals from turnovers alone. They slotted six goals simply by forcing the Cutters into mistakes inside their own 50, prompting Bulldogs mentor Tyson Lane to extol the effort of his forwards when they didn’t have the Sherrin in their hands.
“We made a point of it before the game and when you score six goals from defensive efforts in the forward line you are going to win most games,” he said. “The effort from the forwards was fantastic.”
