A refreshed and prepared Werribee Tigers team returned after the bye to record an impressive 41-point win over the Northern Bullants at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday as Ben Carbonaro reports.
The Tigers - totally outclassed by the Bendigo Bombers in their previous game - were looking to get back on track against a Bullants team that had to work hard for a win over Frankston the previous week.
Northern had the upper hand early as Jaryd Cachia kicked two goals in the first half of the quarter. Werribee took control with Robbie Castello kicking two of his own, and as the lead see sawed all quarter, Ahmed Saad levelled the scores at quarter time for the Bullants with his second goal of the term.
Werribee dominated the second as they booted eight goals to two, playing a style of football that featured strong ball movement and super defensive work from its back six. Despite the Bullants trying to score goals themselves, they buckled under the high level of pressure applied by the Tigers. The home side was in control with a 36-point lead at the main break.
A six goal to four quarter set up the win for Werribee in the third, and despite the Bullants looking better around the ground with their disposal, they were unable to translate this into scoring opportunities. The Tigers led by 46 points at the final break and were looking to finish off the game with a strong final quarter.
The Bullants won the quarter as they kicked six goals to five, but it wasn’t enough to keep themselves in the contest as Werribee kicked away as they recorded an impressive win for the ABC cameras.
Coach Paul Satterley was happy to get a win coming off the club’s first bye of this season.
“We tackled well, we hunted them (Bullants) and I was really pleased with that.”
More importantly, Satterley was happy with to beat an opposition that had previously tasted defeat just once.
“It’s the first one (team) we’ve beaten above us on the ladder and that was something else we’ve spoken about,” he said.
“Obviously achieving that today was really pleasing.”
North Melbourne’s matured aged recruit Cameron Pederson had a day out, marking strongly and kicking eight goals including several from outside the 50 metre arc.
Pederson’s eight goal performance was enough to be named best on ground, but there were also several important contributors.
Tigers captain Dominic Gleeson (31 disposals) was outstanding around the ground especially at stoppages, Ben Sharp (25 disposals) and live wire small forward Robbie Castello (20 disposals) kicked five goals.
For the Bullants, seasoned performer Jarrod McCorkell (25 disposals) was best playing as an on baller and high flyer Ahmed Saad topped the goal kicking with five.
Werribee host the eighth placed Sandringham this week, who are coming off a bye on Sunday whilst the Northern Bullants return to Visy Park to take on the Box Hill Hawks.
