JUNIOR LAKERS FEATURE IN STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Quite a contingent of Junior Lakers journeyed to Adelaide to compete in the annual Basketball SA State Junior Championships.

Five junior Lakers enjoyed success with District Clubs. Rachael Hines is a member of the Eastern Mavericks Under 14 team, which one the Division 1 title. The team scored comprehensive victories in the minor round games and semi-final. Rachael topped off a great weekend with a 44-40 grand final win over the fancied Sturt line-up.

State Under 16 players Georgia Green and Brianna Walters are members of the Eastern Mavericks side which dominated Division 1 of the Championships. Winning margins throughout the weekend were in excess of 30 points. They accounted for Forestville 67-41 in the semi-final and Norwood 71-44 in the title game.

Brad Rathjen is a member of the Southern Tigers Under 14 Boys Division 1 side which was undefeated and easily accounted for West Adelaide 54-32 in the semi-final. Sturt however proved too strong in the Grand Final.

Kane deWit, a member of the SA Country Under 16 team, suited up with Forestville, which finished second in their pool with a 3/1 win loss record. They defeated West 43-32 in the semi-final but then suffered a surprise loss to Norwood, 40-44, in the Grand Final.

The three Limestone Coast teams gained huge benefits from their participation in the State Junior Championships. The Under 14 Boys Div. 1 side coached by Darren Smith, found the going tough without injured state representative Luke Black. They however improved as the weekend unfolded. Junior Laker Lachlan Hunter and Michael Harris are members of this team.

The Under 12 Boys Division 1 team was coached by Craig Berry and finished a creditable sixth in the overall competition. They won two games and lost two before going down to Centrals 37-48 in the ranking final. Talented Lakers duo Brodie Jolley and Shaun Lock suited up with this team.

The success story for Limestone Coast belongs to the Under 12 Boys Reserve side coached by Paul Harris and with Mitchell Harris, Mitchell Hunter and Brayden Hateley as members. They won two games, 51-18 against Forestville and 40-24 against Southern Tigers. Sturt were far too strong to the tune of 40-2. They then defeated North Adelaide 35-34 in the quarter final and Norwood, 30-26, in the semi-final.

They finished runner-up after a much improved performance against Sturt, 35-31. This was an amazing result and shows the rate of progress made over the Championships.
