AFL Darling Downs development manager Keith Webb believes the strength of the 60-player Darling Downs senior representative squad is proof of the game’s continued growth in the area.
The best performing players from the opening six rounds of the AFLDD season have been recognised with selection in the squad, with an eye to choosing the best 22 players to represent the Downs in a representative fixture against New South Wales Northern Rivers this June.
“I think we’re at the stage where the Darling Downs’ base is at its strongest,” Webb said.
“I think that is reflected in the naming of this team.
"Previously in this initial squad, we’ve only been able to invite 45-40 players.
“Now to have 60 players up to this standard shows there is a lot more depth in the Darling Downs football system.”
South Toowoomba, Toowoomba Tigers, Warwick and Highfields all had 10 players selected in the squad, eight players were selected from University, Coolaroo and Goondiwindi had five each and Dalby and Lockyer Valley had three players included.
Warwick’s Jason Wright will return to coach the side again this year.
After losing last year’s match to Northern Rivers by five goals, Wright said he was looking forward to assembling a squad capable of revenge.
“Given we’re playing at home, the majority of the squad will be available and I think it’s going to be a better side than we took last year.”
“Bragging rights are up for grabs. No one from our side was selected in the Queensland Country team last year and this is a chance for some guys to prove they are the best country footballers in Queensland.”
While a Queensland country side is not being selected this year, Webb believes the fixture gives outstanding players a pathway for higher honours.
“Scouts from state league sides come up and sit down to watch these games to pick out the guys best suited to play in the State League,” Webb said.
“It’s also a good chance for the younger kids in our region to experience playing footy at a higher level.”
Webb nominated in-form South Toowoomba ruckman Chris Jackson as one of the players in line for a representative call-up.
“He’s one of the form ruckmen in the competition.
"He’s a talented young man and this is a good avenue for him,” Webb said.
