The Mallee Football Interleague Team is sponsored by Bill and Tania Morrish at Top End Training - Ouyen
by Jim Gordon
On Saturday May 28, the Mallee Football League takes on the North Central League in a game of great significance.
For the MFL a win will enhance the Mallee League as the best District League in the State and will be talked about for many years just as the Regional Premiership in 1974 is still celebrated as the North Central Region’s greatest hour.
The stakes for North Central are just as high if not higher, as they will not want to come second to what they consider to be a less significant league. There is little doubt that North Central will throw all of its energy and influence at this match in an effort to field its strongest team to ward off any challenge to its major league status.
As a team, this is the greatest opportunity that the Mallee Football League has had since its inception. For the individual, a strong performance by any player will come under notice for inclusion in the VCFL District State team. The Victorian State coach will be in attendance on the day.
The MFL has named the players selected for its interleague squad. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers’ coach Colin Durie will lead the side and is a selector along with Tony George and Tony Keely. They will name the team from that squad.
The squad’s first training run will be held on Sunday May 15 at Woomelang with two other training runs to follow.
Proposed starting times for the Interleague games are:
o Under 18s 10:30am NCFL v MFL
o Seniors 12:45pm SFL v BFL
o Seniors 3:00pm NCFL v MFL
Sunraysia and Bellarine are not fielding U18 sides.
There have been several Mallee representatives who have gone on to play at the highest level. Dennis O’Callaghan played for Collingwood, Max Crow Essendon, St Kilda and Footscray and Trevor Poole played for Richmond and Geelong.
