The Essential Energy Tamworth AFL season kicks off this Saturday with three games to be played.
The Inverell Saints take on the Muswellbrook Cats in Inverell. The Narrabri Eagles host the New England Nomads at Narrabri and the Tamworth Swans welcome the Gunnedah Bulldogs to Tamworth with the Tamworth Kangaroos easing themselves into the season with the bye.
League spokesman, Graham Nuttall said this year marked the 15th Season of Australian Football in the New England North West and with the support of Essential Energy and Gerry Griffiths Consulting Engineers again in 2011, the signs are good for a “powerful” and “constructive” season.
“15 years of the Essential Energy Tamworth Australian Football League is a great milestone to reach.
“We were the fastest growing competition in Australia with new teams from Armidale, Muswellbrook, Gunnedah, Inverell and Narrabri joining two Tamworth teams.
“The standard of the competition has also improved markedly from our early years when we had many new players with no experience trying out the “new” code in the area.
“Now we have players with over 200 games experience as well as experienced players coming from out of town for work and wanting a game in their new home town whilst at the same time getting to know other locals as they get involved in the community.
“We are very grateful for the support of Essential Energy, Gerry Griffiths Consulting Engineers and Southern Cross Ten again in 2011.
“The Essential Energy Tamworth AFL has grown over its time because of the support of our generous sponsors and the strong commitment of people associated with the Clubs across the League.
“We also thank the media for their coverage of our Australian game and look forward to this support continuing in 2011,” Mr Nuttall said.
