In a first for the VFL and the Surf Coast Shire, the Seagulls will host the Cats in Torquay on Easter Sunday. The Williamstown versus Geelong match has come about because of the $8.3 million refurbishment of Williamstown’s Burbank Oval at Point Gellibrand which has meant that with the support of the Surf Coast Shire, AFL Victoria will trial this regional game in Torquay. The teams will be playing for the inaugural Surf Coast Trophy as well as the four premiership points, and if the game is successful, both the Williamstown and Torquay Football Clubs will be keen to see this as a regular season fixture.
It is a big year for Williamstown playing away from home all season, with their temporary ‘home’ ground this year Avalon Airport Oval. Credit must go to the club though, for a unique offer to their co-tenants. Williamstown, as a special offer to Werribee Football Club 2011 members, has offered any member who attends any of the 4 nominated Williamstown ‘home’ games (May 7, May 28, June 18 and August 13) and presents their 2011 Werribee membership ticket - admission will be only $5.00 instead of the usual $10.00. A great initiative to draw in the Tigers supporters who may not travel to away games, but still want their VFL fix.
In other Seagulls news, Williamstown will play West Adelaide in the Quarter-Finals of the Foxtel Cup on Saturday June 4, venue TBA
