THREE JUNIOR LAKERS OFF TO NATIONALS

Three Mount Gambier junior basketballers travel to Ulverstone in Tasmania this week to represent SA Country in the 2011 Australian Junior Basketball Championships from April 9th to 16th.Jak Ryan, Jackson Trappett and Samantha Loughhead are members of the state junior teams. The three were chosen after their impressive performances at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury in January and in the recent Trials.

They all received monetary scholarships from the City of Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund to assist with the expenses of their trips to the nationals and previous training weekends held in Adelaide.The Under 18 national championships bring together the best male and female athletes from around the country, showcasing our finest junior basketballers. New Zealand also participates in these championships.

Fourteen teams will compete in two pools of seven in the men’s and women’s competitions and then go into finals. SA Country Women meet Northern Territory in their first game while the Men face a huge assignment in lining up against 2010 champion Victoria Metro.

Others in the SAC Women’s pool are host Tasmania, WA Country, Queensland South, NSW Metro and Victoria Country.The SA Country Men’s pool also includes NSW Country, New Zealand, WA Country, Queensland South and ACT.

Competitions begin on Saturday and conclude with Championship and ranking games on Saturday April 16th.
