The first round of school competitions took place last Tuesday with St Ursula’s College taking out the open division of the Jonathan Brown Cup, St Saviour’s College taking out the Junior division of the Jonathan Brown Cup and powerhouse AFL Dalby school Our Lady of the Southern Cross College were able to take out the Northern States Cup.
St Ursula’s College continued their clean sweep of AFL Schools carnival on the Darling Downs after taking out the open division of the Jonathan Brown Cup. SUC also set a new record as they went through the carnival day undefeated; taking their winning streak to 17 straight wins for Darling Downs school competitions. St Ursula’s were able to take out the Grand-Final with an impressive 23 point win of Toowoomba SHS Mt Lofty Campus at Captain Cook Ovals.
St Ursula’s midfielder Tahlor Sullivan took out the open Division MVP award after a dominating day in the midfield for St Ursula’s.
In the junior division, St Saviour’s College were able to also go through the day undefeated but were challenged by Our Lady of the Southern Cross in the round robin games and also in the final. St Saviour’s were able to convert in front of the goals and were able to take out the Grand-Final by 8 points and take home the school’s first AFL trophy.
St Saviour’s College were also able to take out the MVP award for the junior division and this went to prolific ball winner Shaeleise Law.
The boys of Our Lady of the Southern Cross College proved why their school is an AFL powerhouse after convincingly winning the Northern States Cup. Though they were tested in the round robin stages of the competition, as Harristown SHS looked to take out the Cup for the second time, while Crow’s Nest and Warwick SHS were looking for the first piece AFL silverware. It was the experienced OLOSCC AFL players that steered the Southern Cross side to victory.
Harristown SHS midfielder was voted as the MVP of the Northern States Cup.
All three winning schools will now advance to the next stage of their respective competitions. St Ursula’s College and St Saviour’s College will contest the State Semi Finals of the Jonathan Brown Cup, while the boys from Our Lady of the Southern Cross College will take on winning schools from Brisbane West and the Gold Coast in the State Quarter Finals.
