Last year’s champions Tigers were slow out of the blocks as the Bombers controlled the ball across their half back line setting up a 28 point lead at half-time.
The 3rd quarter was dominanted by South Toowoomba scoring 5.3 to 1.2 to blow the 3 quarter time lead out to a stagging 53 points. Tom Zilm booted what could possibly be the goal of the year as he stepped back to the boundary line and slotted a major from 50 on his non dominant side and when Keith Webb chimed in with running goal from the back line the game was as good as over.
The shell-shocked Tigers were never really able to work their way back into the game, a four goal fourth quarter bringing some respectability to the score-line in a game where they were outplayed by South Toowoomba.
Tom Zilm was a standout for the Bombers up front, kicking three goals, while recruit Jeff Neumann slotted in well to his new team’s structure but best on ground was midfielder Bradon Behan in his first game back to the club after a years absense.
Meanwhile, University got their 2011 campaign off to a winning start with a 104 point victory over the Dalby Swans.
Dalby started the match strongly and led through much of the first quarter before University snatched a five-point lead with a goal on the quarter time siren.
As the game went on Dalby struggled to keep pace with their opponents as the Cougars’ found their range with their kicks and started to hit forwards Al Reilly and Cory Balnaves who combined for seven of University’s 19 goals.
The Highfields Lions continued their strong pre-season form in their opening encounter in 2011, beating Goondiwindi 15.19 (109) to 10.6 (66).
In the final game of the weekend Lockyer Valley was soundly beaten by a sharp looking Warwick side 24.17. (161) to 1.0 (6).
