Former Brisbane Lions and Carlton AFL player Brendan Fevola has stated his intentions to play for the Casey Scorpions in the VFL in season 2011. Less than a month after being axed by the Lions, Fevola’s management company Velocity Sports has confirmed that the 204 game AFL veteran is keen to continue his football career in Melbourne, and in the VFL.
Up to six VFL clubs had enquired about his playing future for 2011, but the Casey Scorpions were seen as the best fit for Fevola, who is likely to be living close to Casey Fields in Cranbourne when he relocates back to Melbourne from Brisbane.
Speaking on The Morning Glory on SEN, Fevola’s manager Peter Blucher made clear that is Fevola is still yet to officially sign with the Scorpions, but has committed to the club. “No contract is signed at all ... he will train there a couple of times this week, this afternoon and Thursday. He will go overseas for a holiday and will come back and train again with the club, and all things being equal and everyone being happy we will look to have a contract in place at that time that he can sign. But nothing has been committed (contract wise) at this stage.
“Casey needs to be convinced that Fev is going there with the best intentions, and from our end he certainly is. He sees two things, it is a chance to get his own footy back on track and also to have a positive influence on some young guys who aspire to get to the level (AFL) where he has been for a long time. We see it as a good fit, and have been appreciative of the commitment shown by Casey.”
Apart from the rumours that had been circulating about Fevola’s move to the VFL, the other story that had been in the media recently was the possibility of a punters trial in the NFL, which Blucher was quick to dismiss. “It has been another favourite media topic ... at the end of the day, Fev’s interest is one playing footy this year in the VFL, with a view to possibly getting back into the AFL. But only once he excluded all possibility of playing league football will he think about the NFL.”
Casey Scorpions kick off season 2011 in round one on April 2 against Geelong at Casey Fields.
