It took a long time coming but the NSW Australian Football History Society have now launched their website at: www.nswfootballhistory.com.au .
While it is still early days, data and images are continually being loaded onto the site which provides a much appreciated view of the very deep history of football in Sydney.
Organisers are slowly adding all the clubs which have competed in every division in Sydney football over the years. Where possible the former officials of each of these are being listed and in some instances photographs of coaches and captains will also be included.
There is a gallery containing many images of Sydney footy over the years and they are searching for more. So if you or you know where some photographs are located which you think may be of interest or have access to a list of previous club officials you can send them in for consideration to history@aflnswact.com.au .
Many old photos and other material are laying around in drawers or shoeboxes which in reality will probably be thrown out when the holder passes. It is important for the sake of the history and tradition of the game that these are preserved and displayed for future generations. There are not many who recognize that Sydney footy has a past that goes right back to 1880. You can play a part in building the tradition and conserving it's history by contacting the Society with information that could prove to be of importance.
Also on their site is a place where club reunions can be advertised, a facility to announce the death of a past player or official and a link which will provide an opportunity to join the Society or even donate to their funds which will enable them to undertake more programmes to assist in preserving the game's heritage.
The committee of the Society is working with the AFL to store items which have been donated and when processed these will eventually be lodged with the State Library of NSW. The league will also provide a glass display cabinet in the foyer off their Moore Park Offices in which historic material relating to the game in Sydney will be put on view.
This is a very commendable project and worthy of your support.
