JUNIOR LAKERS AT SLAM

Three of Mount Gambier’s top junior basketballers travelled to Port Macquarie to represent SA Country in the Under 15 and 17 competitions of the 2011 Pacific Coast Slam.

Alycia Close, in her debut as a state player in the State Under 17 team impressed officials with her hard work and consistency. SA defeated NZ Rata 69-56, NZ Rimu 73-43 and finished fourth at the end of the minor round. SA finished the Slam in third place defeating NSW Kookaburras, 66-65. This is a pleasing result because SA lost to them 41-56 earlier in the week.

Sam Stafford is one of the best in his age group in SA Country Basketball circles. He too had a very good Slam. The team managed just one win in the minor round, defeating NC All Stars 67-36 and finished fourth in its pool. In Sam’s final game for the Slam SA defeated Southern Districts, fourth in the other pool, 60-30.

Danika Jolley followed up her selection in the SA Country Under 14 teams last year with a place in the State Under 15 team for the Slam this year. SA won two games in their pool games, defeating NZ Rata 72-26 and NC All Stars 60-23. This placed them fourth and met Southern Districts, fourth in the other pool. Danika finished on a winning note recording a 58-21 result.
