NZ Breakers vs Cairns Taipans 7.30pm Thursday NSEC
Burger King Breakers big man Gary Wilkinson has dismissed any concerns over his injured right wrist ahead of Thursday night’s top of the table clash with the Cairns Taipans. Wilkinson sprained the wrist in a fall at practice this morning and immediately sought attention from the club physio before returning to the club gym.
Wilkinson says he will be fine for Thursday though.
“The wrist feels fine, Noosa (club physio) says it is a sprain with some minor damage to the ligaments but it doesn’t feel too bad and I’m sure I’ll be fine for Thursday night. So no worries, I’ll be fine.”
The Breakers will be hoping so given the recent contributions from the American, notably his 27 points and 9 rebounds in the road trip win over Adelaide on the weekend as Wilkinson looks to improve week upon week as he comes to terms with the league, the refereeing and the opposition in his first season down under.
In what is likely to be a fiery encounter with the Taipans, two former Breakers in Phil Jones and Lindsay Tait will suit up for the visitors. Both know the Breakers extremely well and will no doubt be keen to impress home fans as much as their own coach and team mates and with Jones in the opposition there is sure to be a flash point or two in the match.
Few who were there when the Breakers hosted Perth two seasons ago will forget Jones’ (then a Breaker) clash with Sean Redhage and already this season when the Taipans visited the North Shore Events Centre in December, Jones was a key figure for the Snakes, albeit in a losing side as he used all his experience to put the home side off their game.
