SOUTH Toowoomba have struck the first blow of the 2011 AFL Darling Downs season, securing the services of former league best and fairest winner Jeff Neumann from Coolaroo. For several years, Neumann has been one of the driving forces behind Coolaroo’s strong performances, most notably a premiership flag in 2009.
But the midfielder has decided to turn over a new page and move to last year’s beaten grand finalists Souths.
“I guess it’s one of those things, it’s hard to move on, but a new challenge arises,” Neumann said. “It’s a bit of a fresh start for me,” he said.
Souths have made the AFLDD grand final the last three seasons in a row, twice taking on Coolaroo, and with the addition of Neumann are expected to be a competition front-runner again next year.
“They’re (Souths) pretty strong all over the paddock, but you can have the world’s best playing list and it counts for nothing until you put performances together on the field,” Neumann said.
As a Holman Medal winner, Neumann is aware of the expectations placed on him coming to a new club, but says he’s not really worried by them.
“I’ll just be trying to do as much as I can at the footy club, enjoy it and build-up to next season,” he said.
As for returning to his former home at Coolaroo for the first time in round 18 next year, Neumann isn’t expecting everyone to agree with his move.
“I guess there’s always going to be people who will criticise you,” Neumann said. “But I don’t mind, I’ll take it as it comes.”
