Three of the Darling Downs most exciting young talents, have been selected into the 2011 Brisbane Lions academy, after the squad of 100 was cut down to the final 32. The Brisbane Lions academy is based around the Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, Wide Bay and Darling Downs regions.
The purpose of the academy is to identify players that the Brisbane Lions believe that they can potentially develop into AFL players with the Lions or another AFL club. Lion’s academy selection is not a reward for good players or about picking an Academy ‘team’, rather it’s about working with boys that exhibit qualities that put them above their peers and may lead to an AFL career.
The three Darling Downs players selected into the Brisbane Lions academy are Joshua Stahlhut, Tye Hughes and Matthew Joseph. These three boys will be pushed to work harder, work on their skills and fitness more away from the academy and regional training. These players will be asked to do the extra little things that set them apart from other players and get them onto an AFL list.
A common phrase used in the AFL is that, “talent will get you looked at”, “hard work will get you there”.
The trio will commence training with the Lions academy in the coming weeks and we wish them all the best.
