The entire senior squad, led by coach Michael Voss and captain Jonathan Brown, will be on the Darling Downs on Thursday-Friday 10-11 February 2011 as part of the AFL’s Telstra Community Camp program.
According to Keith Webb, AFLQ Darling Downs Regional Manager, it will be a wonderful opportunity for AFL players, coaches and fans in the area to draw on the varied experience and knowledge of the Lions stars.
Webb has put together a busy and varied program for what will be the Lions’ first formal visit with the entire Lions list to Toowoomba since 2004.
Although not all details have been confirmed, Webb says the camp will open with an official welcome and media conference with Lord Mayor Peter Taylor on the Thursday afternoon.
At the same time a group of Lions players will attend a Brisbane Lions Best Banners schools competition for Grade 4 students at Queens Park from 1-3pm, heading into a monster Super Clinic and Autograph session for the general public from 3.30-5.30pm.
On the Thursday evening from 6.30-8pm at a venue still to be determined Voss and his coaching team will put the local U18 representative side through their paces, offering the boys a chance to sample training at the elite level and giving local coaches a chance to view first-hand the workings of an AFL coaching group.
Friday will kick off with another master class / coaching session, this time with the Darling Downs based members of the Lions Academy who range from 12-16 years of age.
From there the Lions players will visit high schools around the Toowoomba / Darling Downs region with local development staff to help spread the AFL ‘word’ to the high school community and in conclusion from 12.30-3pm the AFL stars will be involved in primary schools competitions in Toowoomba and Pittsworth.
Webb is hoping to have the Lions players coach and umpire all of the primary school games run as part of the Friday afternoon sport in Toowoomba and Pittsworth with over 40 games running at the same time.
Further details will be release in regards to the Telstra Community Camp as the event draws closer but both AFLQ and AFLDDJ are extremely excited with the opportunity this represents for promotion of the sport within the Darling Downs region.
