NZ Breakers Streak Ends
Defending champions Perth Wildcats have put an end to New Zealand's unbeaten start to the NBL season with a dominant 114-74 victory at a sold out Challenge Stadium on Sunday.
The Wildcats opened up a double-digit lead inside the first quarter and never surrendered it to beat the previously undefeated Breakers with Shawn Redhage leading the way with 32.
The Wildcats took care of business in just their second home match of the 2010/11 season after five of the opening six games on the road where they were able to pull out wins in Melbourne and Townsville, but lose to Adelaide, New Zealand and Cairns.
Sunday's victory backs up the home opener against Wollongong and sees the defending champions improve to a 4-3 record, while New Zealand slips to 5-1.
The loss for New Zealand brings to an end an impressive 11-game winning run also after taking out the past six games of last season.
The Breakers would still be satisfied coming away from the Doomsday Double weekend with a 1-1 split after Friday night's win in Adelaide, and with the knowledge that Kirk Penney will come back into the team after missing this weekend due to his brother's wedding in Italy.
As well as Redhage's 32 points and 10 rebounds, Stephen Weigh scored 16 points, Kevin Lisch 14, Damian Martin 12, as well as 12 boards and six assists.
Kevin Braswell scored 16 for New Zealand, Gary Wilkinson 14 and Mika Vukona 11.
The Wildcats got the jump in the first quarter largely thanks to 11 points from Lisch. The lead stretched to 11 on the back of baskets to Cam Tovey and Brad Robbins, and then a three to Drew Williamson.
It was still nine at the end of the first period and then 12 again when Redhage hit a three to start the second. He hit another two to open a 14-point lead for the 'Cats and it got out to as much as 16 when Robbins hit a three for Perth.
New Zealand made a brief comeback with triples of their own to Braswell, Vukona and Thomas Abercrombie but the half-time margin was still 13 in favour of Perth.
Any hope the Breakers had of making a quick comeback in the second half were dashed with an early three, and field goals from Jesse Wagstaff and Weigh that stretched Perth's advantage to 18. It was then soon 21 after a three from Weigh and 23 after two to Wagstaff.
New Zealand did make a fight back of sorts to close to within 11 after a 10-0 run, but Perth steadied to close out the third period strongly and still lead by 18 at three quarter-time.
The Cats ensured the win in the opening minute of the last quarter with two baskets to big man Matt Knight and a three to Redhage to stretch the lead to 25 at 89-64. It was then out to 29 soon after thanks to 9-0 start to the quarter and later got out to 40, the final margin.
The Wildcats return to the road now to play the struggling Melbourne Tigers on Friday night at The Cage before four straight home games. New Zealand returns to Auckland for two weeks of home matches against Wollongong and Gold Coast.
