Charlie Rose Cup, is the biggest day on the Secondary School AFL calendar. Charlie Rose Cup teams consist of players selected from the Independent Cup and Brisbane Lions Cup. The Independent Hawks are made up of players that have participated for their school in the Independent Cup which is for the regions Private schools. The State High Demons are players from the regions State High Secondary Schools which participate in the Brisbane Lions Cup. The best 22 for each side are selected by AFL Queensland Development Staff and the schools coaches.
The Independent Hawks ended the State High Demons hold on the Charlie Rose Cup in a hard fought 17point win at Gold Park in the OPEN division. The Hawks started with all guns blazing with a three goal to one opening term, which saw the likes of club players Nic Upton, Joe Verney and Jacob Frampton running riot along with Grammar rookies in Ryan Leeson, Elliot Barrett and Fergus Frith. This is where the State High Demons experience AFL players in Michael Langton, Matt Waltisbuhl and Matt Joseph put a stop to the free running Hawks and fired back with three quick shots at goal to be only down by 11points at the first break. During the second and third quarters, both sides went goal for goal in an exciting affair. Nic Upton, Ryan Leeson, Josh Smith and Jordan Bonney were outstanding setting up a lot of forward raids, though the Demons defence in Matt Waltisbuhl, Dylan Bennett and Nathan Turner were able to account for the Hawks inside 50’s and get the ball out quickly.
Going into the last term, the Independent Hawks held a slender six point lead and the Demons were looking to fire after a six shots on goal to the Hawks two, all the momentum was with the State High.
This is where Frith, Smith, Upton, Verney, Frampton and Lansdowne stated their authority and ran over a tired State High side. Langton, Waltisbuhl, Bennett, Joseph and Jerome never gave up for the Demons and fought right to the end. The Independent Hawks were able to keep the State High Demons scoreless in the final term and were able to run out 7.9 (51) to 4.10 (34) victors and this win ended the Hawks drought on the Trophy and this was the Independent Schools first win since 2005.
Nic Upton from Downlands College was adjudged best on ground in the Open Division Charlie Rose Cup. The Charlie Rose Cup now sits at 5 wins a piece and is starting to launch a rivalry between the two sides.

Charlie Rose Cup did not run between the years of 1997 to 2002
In only the second year of the Under 15 Division for the Charlie Rose Cup and State High wanting to erase the devastating 3 point loss in 2009 and the Independent Hawks wanting to add to last year’s win, this games rivalry showed from the start. With heavily contested packs and high flying crashing marks, the game was on and the Demons got the better of the Hawks and opened the 2010 Cup with a six scoring shots to one, too take a twenty point lead in the first break. Troy Rissman, Tom Wainwright and Ashley Taylor were outstanding for the Demons, it was the never give up attitude of the Hawks Stuart Huggins, Blair Bircha and Luke Mason that really stood out.
Both sides went goal for goal in the second and third terms as Rissman was putting on a clinic through the midfield and hard running half back flanker Wainwright was shining with confidence. Schaumann and Verrall were important for State High and were damaging as that link player for the Demons. Ash Taylor stood out as the flair and ‘X’ factor for the Demons as he racked up the positions through the centre of Gold Park and even barrelled home a 50metre goal late in the third. Bircha was the best of the Independent players with his versatility and flamboyance, though Skehan and Huggins were live wires up forward, creating havoc for the State High defence.
The last term is where Matt Joseph, Ashley Taylor and Warner McIntosh came into their own and were able to provide a lot of speed from half back to half forward and worried the Indy defenders. Tim Tate, Blair Bircha and Stuart Huggins were outstanding in a losing side. The State High Demons under 15’s were able to run out 9.9 (63) to 5.3 (33) victors, to record their first Charlie Rose Cup win.
Harristown State High School student Ashley Taylor took out the Best on Ground honors in a dominating display by the half forward flanker.
