Pool AThe Breakers Academy suffered their third consecutive defeat in the second round of the Supercity competition at Atlas Place on Saturday. The 89-66 defeat at the hands of the Harbour Heat Reserves leaves the Breakers having to win their final round robin game against West Auckland in order to make the semi finals.

Two more weeks left in pool play and the Heat Reserves have clinched first and also a semi final spot along with Northside and the Breakers who are fighting out for 2nd and 3rd. Waitakere and West Auckland both still have a chance at the playoffs they play each other this weekend and this game could decide who will get a spot in the semi’s if Waitakere win West are out if West win and Waiatkere loose to Northside the following week then West will go through. The team that finishes fifth will play the winners of pool B on semi finals night.

The Academy started the game strongly scoring the first 8 points of the game but by quarter time they had been reeled in by the Heat who led 19-18. The shoe was on the opposite foot at the start of the second period, the Heat scoring the first 8 points of the quarter with Dan Ryan particularly prominent. Sam King got the scoreboard moving for the Breakers but a neat exchange of passes between Hayden Allen and Jarrod Kenny resulting in a Kenny lay up got the biggest cheer of the day from a reasonable sized crowd – the Heat ahead 42-34 at half time.

Despite some defensive heroics by Inga Solofuti the Heat began to pull away in the third quarter and led by 19 points in the dying stages of the stanza before a Brad Anderson trey and a three point play from Rueben Te Rangi reduced the margin to 13 points, 62-49 to the Heat at three quarter time.

Things got worse for the Academy in the opening minute of the final quarter as Hayden Allen converted a rare 4 point play and King was forced to the bench after picking up his fourth foul. The game became very loose in the final stages as the Breakers chased the game but were unable to make much impression on the experienced Heat line up.

Harbour Heat Reserves 89 (Dan Ryan 21, Hayden Allen 17, Zac Fitsgerald 13) Breakers 66 (Brad Anderson 18, Morgan Nathan & Inga Solofuti 11)

Northside 95 (Cameron Stuart 19, Jordan Reid & Marco Alexander 14) West Auckland 92 (Matt Yukich 36, CHiris Fahrenson 18, Kael Tarawa 14)
