Cairns Saints footballers are a close-knit bunch, but none share a bond quite like Matt and Josh Walsh.
The brothers played in their first premiership together on Saturday after Josh arrived in the Far North this season to link with older sibling Matt.
Finishing the game with three goals, Matt said Josh’s presence on the field made the flag extra special.
“He came up here so we could play footy together and it’s paid off,” he said. “It’s kind of a surreal feeling but it’s fantastic.”
After his brother struggled with injury for much of the season, Josh feared the chance to share a premiership with him was lost.
“I didn’t think he’d get up for the game because of his injuries, but he came through and I’m glad he did because it’s the best feeling ever,” he said.
“It’s been well worth the trip up here. I’ve loved it up here with the Cairns Saints. No one gets paid and everyone plays for the right reason. I might have to stick around for another year.”
