Match Reports
In the minor semi-final, Western Wolves took on Sydney University. The wind was towards the Golf Course End towards the changing room side and was worth a couple of goals. The Bombers won the toss and decided to kick with the wind. After a settling in period where the ball was parked in the Bombers half-forward line, it was to be Amelia Kavanagh opened the scoring followed by Marie Keating. In the second quarter Wests scored with Jorja Jones but in hindsight could have done more with their possession as they were parked in their forward zone. The Bombers ran the game in the third quarter and kicking a goal against the wind in the final quarter to win Sydney University 6.11.47 to Western Wolves 1.3.9. Best for the Bombers were Una McKay and Melissa Khoury with three goals, whilst for the Wolves Shelley Bates and Michaela Ekman were two towers of strength in their backline. That means the Wolves season for 2010 comes to an end whilst the Bombers live for at least another week.
In the major semi-final, a large crowd gathered for the big semi-final clash. Balmain winning the toss kicked four goals in the first quarter to Newtown's one. Newtown replied back in the second quarter whilst holding Balmain scoreless which must have been the first time in 15 matches leaving the scores fairly even in the main break. In the final quarter Balmain using the wind managed to extend the lead narrowly but Newtown were determined in the final quarter to slam home four goals to two goals to win Newtown Breakaways 10.8.68 to Balmain Dockers 9.4.58. In hindsight the ability to score against the wind was the determining factor. This means Newtown has reached their 8th grand final in nine years - an incredible record.
Preliminary Final Preview
There is nothing more dangerous than a wounded side hurt in pride, so it'll be interesting to see the resilience amongst Dockerland this week. Sydney University showed enough that the preliminary final will also be a tough challenge and I think there is less than 15 points by the time the final siren sounds. Can the tall forwards of Sydney University be too much for the tough defensive Docker unit? Who will win the midfield battle and who gets to keep full-forward Belinda Pride honest? Answers and more at 12 noon, next Saturday.
Great umpiring by all in orange and green on Saturday and good luck to next week's appointees.
