Amanda Harris to play for Tall Ferns
Whilst most eyes will be on the Tall Blacks over the next week or so and in particular the Harbour contingent (Penney, Abercrombie and Anthony), the Tall Ferns will also be in action.
The Ferns are undertaking a three test tour of Japan and they too have a strong Harbour contingent. Current Breeze standouts Karlene Kingi and Noni Wharemate make the trip as does former Breeze player Lisa Wallbutton, who has spent the last two years playing in Australia. Also included for the first time is dynamo point guard Amanda Harris, daughter of Harbour Reps Administrator Julie Harris. The Ferns will be managed by Breeze Manager and long time Harbour Basketball supporter Helen Lacey.
Amanda is a product of the Harbour system, beginning her basketball education at Willow Park School before progressing through the Harbour age group system and High School basketball at Northcote College. Amanda becomes the third member of the National Championship winning Harbour Under 20 team of 2005 to gain a full international singlet following the afore mentioned Lisa Wallbutton and Micaela Cocks who is just embarking on a professional career having signed to play for Energa Torun in Bulgaria. Like Cocks, Amanda has just finished a basketball scholarship in the States having recently graduated from the Alderson Broaddus College, ranking 8th in the whole country in Assists in her final year.
Amanda was originally only going to be home for a few weeks visiting family and playing for Harbour Breeze in the WBC before returning to Alderson Broaddus as an assistant coach. However, her outstanding form in the successful Breeze team drew a call from Tall Ferns assistant coach Aik Ho, requesting Amanda to put her return to the States on hold so that she could participate in the Tall Ferns trial earlier this week.
The trial was a success and Amanda makes her full international team debut this week. We wish Amanda and all our international representatives well in the coming few days
