St Ursula’s College could become the regions first school to take out a State wide competition run by AFL Queensland. St Ursula’s College in Toowoomba recently won their way through undefeated in the Darling Downs regions Youth Girls Cup. From this they were asked to represent the region at the State Semi Finals at Sherwood AFC, this is where they shook up the competition.
In their first game against Brigidine State High School from the Brisbane West region they ran out 6 goal victors and gained more invaluable confidence as they came up against the Gold Coasts powerhouse school in Benowa State High School. St Ursula’s went about their business and played their hard running and quick game style, with that game style working, at the main break they were up by 17points. If SUC wanted to progress onto the State Finals they had to continue their game plan. SUC executed their plan after an early 4th quarter hiccup where Benowa got within 7 points; St Ursula’s ran out 15point victors and advanced into the State Grand-Final to be played against Mountain Creek State High School from the Sunshine Coast. This game will be played on Thursday 26th August from 4pm at Giffin Park, AFL Queensland HQ. If they can win the Grand-Final against MCSHS, St Ursula’s College will be the first Darling Downs School (primary or secondary) to take out a Schools Competition.
Making the State Final is a great achievement for the Toowoomba private school, as St Ursula’s only introduced Australian Rules football, in the middle 2009. Best of luck to St Ursula’s College, stay tuned for the State Final results.
