MATCH REPORT:
Congratulations to Ben Jones, West End, who played his 50th game today.
This game was a real arm wrestle in the first quarter, with neither team able to take control, as both backlines held firm. The only score of the quarter was when West End’s Luke Miller received a free kick next to the point post and kicked truly from a difficult angle and that was the margin at quarter time. In the second quarter, Abhishek Parekh kicked straight and extend West End’s lead to 12 points. The Southside kids continued to increase their attack at the ball and force it forward and got their first score after a long shot at goal by Riley Livingstone. Just before half time, Liam Ware took a nice mark in front of goals and kicked a much needed goal, with West End leading by a goal at half time. In the third quarter, it was much the same as the first half, with neither side letting up in the blustery conditions. West End’s Cameron Grant kicked the first major for the quarter, roving some good ruck work to snap a goal. Southside continued to try and get the ball forward, but some excellent defence from West End prevented any easy scoring opportunities in the quarter, giving West End the lead at the last break by 11 points. As both coaches praised their kids on terrific efforts so far, they also pleaded for one final effort to make the grand final. Mitchell Fawkner responded for Southside, getting his hands on the ball at the ruck contests, but West End swamped his team mates as the collected the ball. West End through some great teamwork starting at half back moved the ball forward and after a solid tackle in the goal square, the ball ended up in Luke Miller’s hands who coolly slotted through his second goal, giving them a 17 point buffer with half a quarter to go. This seemed to really spur the Southside kids on, as they realized their opportunity slipping away. Trent Prosser drifted forward and took a great pack mark and kicked straight for an important goal. It wasn’t long before Trent got involved again with a great tackle to earn a free kick, and then with the aid of a 50m penalty, he kicked long to Riley Livingstone, who marked and goaled, to give them a slim chance. However, it was not to be, as time ran out and West End victorious 4-3-27 to 3-2-20 in a great game of junior footy.
