As a result of testing positive for cannabis use the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand has suspended North Harbour Heats Corey Webster until 23 August, 2010. Corey returned a positive sample after the Harbour Heat v Bay Hawks NBL game on 21 May 2010 and has served a provisional suspension since June 23, which was imposed before the Harbour Heat were due to play in the NBL quarter finals. Corey admitted his violation in the Tribunal hearing and his suspension will mean that he has missed the opportunity to participate for the Tall Blacks at the FIBA World Basketball Championship in Turkey starting on 28 August. Chairman of Harbour Basketball, Phil Henderson said it is a tough lesson for Corey, missing out on the Tall Blacks going to the World Champs, but there must always be a substantive penalty for those that choose to break the rules. Harbour will continue to support Corey and ensure he obtains help and guidance going forward. Dillon Boucher a fellow Harbour Heat player will act as a mentor for Corey and will offer him guidance both on and off the court. Corey formally apologised to the North Harbour Basketball Board, supporters and sponsors. He expressed his regret in letting a lot of people down and he fully realises the impact that his actions had on the Heat team and the NBL competition.
