They might only have a mathematical chance of figuring in finals series, but for North Cairns that possibility is enough to give them September purpose for the rest of the season.
The Tigers kept their slim chances of making the AFL Cairns top four alive with a vital 11.19-85 to 8.6-54 victory over the Cairns City Cobras at Watsons Oval on Saturday.
The home side led by 18 points at halftime but Tigers-coach Wes Lord said inaccuracy in front of the sticks nearly coast his team.
“We struggled with that and if we could’ve been out of their (Cobras’) reach a lot earlier,” he said.
“But overall it was a good win but the boys.”
The victory leaves the Tigers on the ladder, eight points behind the fourth-placed Manunda Hawks.
While the Tiger need results to go their way to crack a finals spot, Lord his side’s mission for the rest of 2010 was clear.
“We just have to win the rest of our games and hope some of the other side’s about us fall at the final hurdle,” he said.
In a blow to the Tigers, Ben Newman’s season is almost certainly over after the defender suffered a suspected broken ankle on Saturday.
In the final match of the round, Port Douglas showed how big the gulf between the league’s top and bottom placed sides is by thrashing South Cairns 35.17-227 to 6.3-39 at home.
The Crocs had kicked 17 goals by halftime and there was no let up from the league benchmarks when play restarted.
Daryl Taylor booted eight majors for the Crocs, while midfielder Cayden Beetham was almost untouchable through the centre.
On a black afternoon for the Cutters, on field leader Cameron Campbell stood tall and was named his sides best.
