Youth Girls footy is up and running on the Darling Downs. For the past couple of months, girls from the region have been participating in the Under 18 Youth Girls Toowoomba Crows training squad and have been loving it! Girls from the Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba, Highfields, Pittsworth and surrounding areas have been participating and in recent weeks have been travelling down to Brisbane to play with the Southern Storm who play in the Under 18 Youth Girls Competition for South East Queensland and are based in South Brisbane.
All Girls aged from 14 to 18 are welcome to come train, of a Sunday morning at Rockville Oval: Dates Listed below
- Sunday 18th July - 10:00am
- Sunday 25th July - 10:00am
- Sunday 1st August- 9:00am
- Sunday 8th August - 11:00am
- Sunday 15th August - 11:00am
Training sessions go for 45-75minutes and are based around the fundamentals of Australian Rules Football. AFL Queensland Development officer Jeff Neumann runs the sessions and he is happy with the turnout so far.
"From week to week we have been getting 12-16girls to training, with currently 28girls on the books so far, its been fantastic", he happily stated. "In 2011, we will look at putting together a Under 18 Toowoomba Crows Youth Girls squad and then after that, a womens side, followed by a under 15 girls team, in the Brisbane competitions. This will give girls a pathway through football, so once they have participated in the Auskick program and local football up to under 14 level, they have somewhere to go instead of dropping out of our great sport".
This will be major boost for the local region and leaves an exciting future for AFL on the Downs!
