Men's Game Previews - Round 16

(Includes Round 7 Results when the Teams last played)

Central Districts Lions v Forestville Eagles, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Starplex
Forestville 94 (Brad Gerlach 19, Riley Luettgerodt, Brad Sullivan 17) defeated
Centrals 81 (Zane Reeves 35, Wade Pidock 15, Matthew Atkins 11)

Centrals are at home for the second week in a row to host the Forestville Eagles who lost to the Sturt Sabres after putting in a poor first quarter performance allowing the Sabres to rack up 34 points whilst only managing 17 points themselves. The Eagles bounced back in the second period where they more than doubled the Sabres score, but then fell behind in the third term without ever recovering. The Lions were competitive against Eastern in a high scoring game with Eastern narrowly winning each of the quarters. The Lions meet Forestville with Riley Luettgerodt in full flight - he has put together scores of 39, 43, 35 and 28 points in his last 4 matches. He is the leading scorer in the men's competition averaging 27.3 points per game. Zane Reeves for the Lions has been productive over recent games and is expected to be their major source of scoring. Lion's import Wade Pidock had a good first half against Eastern and will need to put together a four quarter performance if the Lions are to cause an upset and break their run of outs.

Eastern Mavericks v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Mount Barker
Eastern 88 (Shane Breheny 22, Cameron Myles, Brad Hill 19, Jordan Dodman 15) defeated
South 86 (Sammy Gazzo 20, Adam Blight 18, Steve Pilkington 15, Luke Frost 8)

When the sides met in Round 7, scores were locked together for the last 1:24 of the game until a reverse layup by Mav's Cameron Myles on the buzzer won the game. South's Sammy Gazzo who has been a prolific scorer for his team this season had 14 second half points. Little separated the sides throughout the game with scores being tied on 9 occasions and 25 lead changes kept the crowd entertained. South needed a double overtime period to conquer Southern last round with South's Cameron Bruce knocking down two 3 pointers in the second period of overtime to help secure the win. Panthers Adam Blight and Steve Pilkington both had their best return for the season when they finished with 24 points and 18 points respectively. Eastern had an even 4 quarter team performance in their win against the Lions and welcome back Shane Breheny this weekend. Eastern have not lost a game this season to a team below them on the premiership table and would start slight favourites at home.

Southern Tigers v Norwood Flames, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale           Norwood 87 (David Cooper 15, Daniel Webber 14, Andrew Webber 13) defeated
Southern 69 (Tristan Braithwaite 24, Scott O'Connor 13, Michael Florence 11)

Norwood will be looking to clinch this encounter after suffering losses in their last two outings against West Adelaide and North Adelaide. After those losses they find themselves in a 3 way battle with Sturt and the Rockets for second position at the end of the minor round. Norwood welcomed back Dan Thompson from injury last game and he will be all the better for the outing. Southern lost the local derby clash in double overtime to South with Tristan Braithwaite the game high scorer with 32 points. Southern have been competitive over recent weeks although they have only recorded just the one win against Centrals.  Norwood will need to be on song if they wish to finish as high as second. The Bearcats look almost certain to finish top, currently holding a 2 game break over the Flames, Sturt and North.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Sturt Sabres, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
Sturt 84 (Jacob Holmes, Tom Daly 19, Darren Ng 18, Jan Warbout 10) defeated
West 76 (Brad Davidson 25, Chris Molitor 18, Kurtis Phillips 11)

In the Men's match of the round West Adelaide can eliminate Sturt as a threat to taking top place by claiming victory from this encounter. With top of the table West facing equal second Sturt, final positions at the end of the minor round rest on this result. West has North and Southern as their last matches while Sturt has Centrals and North. Both clubs would start favourites to win their last two matches. Therefore, providing results go as expected, West would claim the minor premiership with a win from this game. The match-ups of Sturt's leading player Jacob Holmes against Chris Molitor and Blake Truslove will be worth watching. Holmes has been a rebounding machine in most games, but his influence should be curtailed by the height of Molitor and Truslove. Whether Sabres guard Darren Ng plays could be crucial to the result. He has missed some games this season and didn't play last week after scoring 29 points the week before. There is some doubt about West's guard Brad Davidson who is as deadly as Ng from outside but he saw out the game from the bench in West's win over Woodville. Davidson's availability to see court time would be a big bonus for West.

North Adelaide Rockets v Woodville Warriors, Sat, July 10th, 6.30pm at Hillcrest
North 63 (Tom Rowe 17, Nick Hambour, Rhys Elliott 14, Leif Burdon 8) defeated
Woodville 61 (Peter Steel, Cameron Wilson, Brady Brink 11, Mark Egel 10)

Woodville's men need one more win to equal their form of 2009 when they secured 6 wins for the season. North Adelaide needs victory as it faces West and Sturt in its last two matches of the season. If the Rockets can win this match and the last two it can avoid a knock out elimination final. North had a good win against the Flames last round by 7 points (73-66). Woodville struggled in the second and third quarters in their loss to the Bearcats 76-63 but stayed in touch throughout the game.  Since the sides last met, Pero Vasilijevic has joined the Rockets from overseas and he has made a big difference with his scoring output and rebounding strength. He will present a major stumbling block to a Woodville win. The loss of import Brady Brink back to America has been a blow to the Warriors but Josh Knight and Mark Egel have produced consistent numbers over recent games. North would be expected to string together their 4th win in a row at home.
