In the Youth Girls Interstate Challenge, ACT was able to achieve a cleansweep and defeat NSW in the U'15 and U'18 categories. The match report can be clicked on here.
At Drummoyne Oval, Balmain turned on the big guns on brave Macquarie University. Balmain started from the get go with lots of goals from Tracey Robinson, Belinda Pride and the ever-youthful Christina Matthews as they demonstrated why the Dockers are this season's hot favourites. Balmain won 28.25.193 to Macquarie University 1.0.6
At Sydney University, the Bombers put on a show for Family Day on Oval No. 1 defeating the Western Wolves by 64 points. The Bombers really impressed in the 2nd quarters onwards to dominate the game leaving the Wolves scratching their heads. The end score was Sydney University 12.11.83 to Western Wolves 2.7.19.
At Mahoney the Bondi Shamrocks sent their comedian German player Beate Tonder with a fond farewell as well as celebrating Kate Grabowski's 50th SWAFL Game (45 with Sydney University and 5 for the Shamrocks) with a win. Although inaccurate as the scoreboard will show, Shamrocks dominated possession but were guilty of bombing the ball from distance to score behinds instead of majors. The Power did a good job in their defence. Kate Woodlands did well for the Shamrocks while Kathryn Hull impressed for the Power in a tough gig in the office. The end score was Bondi Shamrocks 9.17.71 to Southern Power 0.2.2.
In the final match Newtown played the Stingrays where the Breakaways started proceedings with 4 goals in the first quarter and were never headed from there. SWAFL Captain of the Team of the Decade - Stephanie Foster showed as if she had been cryogenically unfrozen to come out of retirement to lead the Breakaways to victory. The final score was Newtown Breakaways 13.17.95 to UNSW-Easts Stingrays 1.1.7
The ladder remains the same.
Round 13 Preview
Next Saturday has Sydney Uni on campus again but this time at St Paul's Oval hosting the Newtown Breakaways in the match of the round. With Teams 2 and 3 on the ladder playing each other, it'll be a tough game and one for the casual spectator to watch. Can the Uni Bombers cause an upset or will the Breakaways continue their winning momentum? I think the result will be less than two goals either way.
At the Village Green, the UNSW-Easts Stingrays are hosting Wollongong Saints. The Saints have been hit hard by the loss of university students during their break so it'll be interesting to see if they can call upon their Youth Girl players for this vital match. The Stingrays will be keen to play this match as one to make a challenge for the finals.
At Mahoney, in Game One - the Bondi Shamrocks host league leaders Balmain Dockers. The Dockers got almost close to 200 points last weekend so it's all hands to the wheel for the Shamrocks to stop their momentum.
In Game Two, Macquarie University host the Western Wolves. Last time the Bravehearts suffered a couple of head knocks and so will be keen to reduce their injury list. The Wolves will be keen to get back on the winners list after suffering two defeats in a row, something that I can't remember in my time at SWAFL.
The Power have the bye.
