Tuesday, 29/6/10, Day 1 of this year's Interleague Carnival saw a mixed batch of results for all three TDJFL teams. In what turned out to be a great day for footy weather wise, the TDJFL teams were caught out a little early today with their first games, which could have a huge bearing on whether they make the Grand Final on Sunday.
The Under 12s started the day behind the eight ball when their "Aaron Sandilands" ruckman Matthew Bond suffering a back injury and could not take his place in the team. This caused a bit of a headache for the coaching staff with some wholesale changes to the team line up which was probably a little disheartening for the rest of the boys. They played Sale in the first game and Sale got out of the blocks early, getting the first couple of goals, but the Traralgon boys fought hard through the efforts of Trent Prosser & Joel Phelan, and trailed by only a couple of points at half time. In the second half, the Traralgon boys tried hard, but could not stem the scoring of Sale, who ran out winners 4-5-29 to 2-1-13. Better plaers for Traralgon were Trent Prosser, Joel Phelan, Kade Duncan, Zac Tactor, Fletcher Ormrod & Jacob Peterson. Goal kickers were Kade Duncan and Lachlan Gilroy.
In their second game, the boys were a bit more confident, as a replacement player was brought in, in the shape of Nic Duncan from Police Boys. Nic was able to get his hands on the ball first in the middle against Warragul, which allowed the onballers to move the ball forward and create more scoring opportunities. The boys knew that if they wanted to make the Grand Final, they could not afford to lose this game, and with Nic creating a formidable target up forward, and the ball being pumped in by Nathan Catherwoord and Joel Phelan, the Traralgon boys were able to record their first win 2-5-17 to 0-2-2. Best players were Nathan Catherwood, Joel Phelan, Fletcher Ormrod, Kade Duncan, Justin Little & Riley Livingstone. Goal kickers were Tristan Turpin & Nathan Catherwood.
The boys now must beat Central Gippsland and Bairnsdale tomorrow to have any chance of playing in the Grand Final on Sunday.
In the Under 14s, Traralgon played Sale and got off to a great start, controlling the play, but unable to exert any scoreboard pressure. Sale upped the ante in the second quarter and got on top, to hold a slim lead at the long break. The second half saw Traralgon create many scorong opportunities, but failed to kick straight, eventually going down 5-7-37 to 1-9-15 in a game a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests. Best Players were Hayden Britton, Jayden Hinde, Jake Vucenovic, Christian Buykx-Smith, Ash DiCiero & Luke Stuckey. Goal kicker was Ash DiCiero.
The second game was a fast paced running game against Warragul. Both teams were able to move the ball with the fantastic passages of play and create scoring opportunities. Christain BS, Damian Yates and Jayden H were great this game in defence, as their spoiling and rebounding prevented Warragul from scoring several times and set up the likes of Jack Jenkins, Tate Marsh to run the ball through the middle and send into the forward line. By three quarter time, the Traralgon boys had set up a 5 goal lead. To Warragul's credit they continued to challenge, but the Traralgon boys wanted this win to keep their finals chances alive and ran out winners 10-6-66 to 6-3-39. Best players were Ash DiCiero, Jack Jenkins, Michael Jacobson, Connor Ambler, Damian Yates and Christian "Goose" Buykx-Smith. Gola kickers were Cameron Graham, Eden Farley, Tate Marsh 2 each, and singles to Hayden Britton, Jake Vucenovic, James Jacobson & Jack Jenkins.
These boys still have a chance of making the Grand Final, but need towin both games on Wednesday against Central Gippsland and Bairnsdale.
The Under 16 Boys did not get off to the start they were hoping, catching a "red hot" Sale team first up that got out of the blocks first and created scoreboard pressure right from the very start. The Traralgon boys tried to curb their opposition's attack on the ball, but Sale just had too many winning players in this game as highlighted by the final score, running out winners 17-11-113 to 6-2-38. Best players were Lachlan Grant, Daniel Vandyke, Zac Anderson, Justin Trew, Rob Spector & Ben Truin. Goal kickers were Brandon McDonald 2, and single to Rob Spector, Ben Truin, Daniel Vandyke & Rod Croft.
In their second game, they took on the boys from Bairnsdale. The Traralgon boys had their chances in this game, and the backline stood up very well under constant pressure from the many forward thrusts Bairnsdale were able to conjuer up, especially from half back. The Traralgon boys just could not take advantage when kicking with the wind, with Bairnsdale running out winners 10-12-72 to 2-2-14. Bets players were Harley Lowrie, Jack Rogan, Alexander Bermingham, Rod Croft, Lachlan Grant & Leigh Jones. Rod Croft snagged both goals in this game.
These boys unfortunately will not make the Grand Final, but have a chance tomorrow to end the carnival on a winning note, when they play Omeo & District, who lost both of their games today, so we wish the boys good luck for that game tomorrow.
