Jets Darryl Hudson and Matt Te Huna combined for 64 points adding the Hawks to their collection of upsets down the home stretch of the season with a 92-85 victory.

Hudson scored 8 of his 39 in overtime, while Te Huna was the only other Jets to score in double figures with 25.

Trailing by four in the final quarter the Jets went on an 11-0 run midway through the quarter, leading by as many as nine with 2.28 left.

But the Jets felt the defensive pressure of the Hawks committing five turnovers in the last one minute in the half. Everard Bartlett (18 points) dished to Jon Rogers (13 points) for the game tying field goal which lead to the extra period.

In earlier games this season the Jets would have faltered but they showed their experience in overtime having played in an extra period or more in three previous games this season, winning the period 12-5.

The Hawks who came into the game with a four game winning streak looked certain to finish third, now have dropped down to fifth and will travel to the North Shore where they will play the Heat who have beaten the Taranaki Mountain Airs 84-78.

The Heat backcourt of Corey Webster and Kavossy Franklin top scored for their side with 20 and 19 respectively.

The homeside managed to win without their experienced forward Dillon Boucher and dominated the boards outrebounding the visitors 43-32, in particular Beny Anthony who had a double double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Airs showed some fight after trailing by five in the opening period, going on a 10-0 run with four left in the half to lead by as many as six. Jack Leasure who had a game high 25 points and Jeremiah Trueman (15 points) led the way each hitting two threes in the quarter.

After the break the Heat locked down defensively winning the period 22-12, Webster making sure their would be no upset scoring 12 points in the final period to seal the home quarter final for Wednesday night.

In Nelson the Giants have shrugged off their two home game losing streak to comfortably defeat the Southland Sharks 83-71. Giants Mika Vukona stepped up big with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while import Michael Harrrison also had a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The homeside came off the blocks quick winning the first quarter 27-14 and would never trail in the game despite only scoring 31 points in the second half.

As a team the Sharks really struggled offensively shooting a poor 32% from the floor and 7/29 beyond the arc. Sharks Mike Helms again topscored for his side with 23, but needed 22 field goal attempts to attain them.

Giants will be pleased with their defense restricting the Sharks to 30 second half points and holding last week’s player of the week Rene Rougeau to a season low three points. Arthur Trousdell had a double double of 14 points and 11 rebounds but also shot a poor 4/17 from the field.

The two teams could possibly meet on Tuesday if the Sharks can beat the Jets tomorrow in Palmerston North, but this will be no easy feat as the Jets have won their last two at home and has won four of their last five games.

If the Sharks lose to the Jets then the Giants will play the Christchurch Cougars at home instead.
