Perhaps the surprise from Round 8 was the win of Tatura over the Shepparton Swans after the Swans two previous good wins over Rochy & Shepp United. The Bulldogs were ahead all day and answered every challenge the Swans presented - the Bulldogs won 18.14 (122) to 15.17 (107). Cameron TREWIN kicked 5 for the Bullies while Ben COSGRIFF and Brendan KEAST were named as Tatura's best players. Robbo kicked 5 for the Swans to take him 5 goals clear of Shepp United's Jason EAGLE. Young Jessie FINNEN was named the best player for the Swans. Mooroopna accounted for Mansfield by 23 points with Craig WHELAN slotting 6 and Chris SCHIRMER 5 and both being named in the Cats best. David MENSCH kicked 6 for the Eagles and was named in the best along with Tim DEMETRIOU and Brett MAHONEY. The Cats would be very pleased with their big Heidelberg recruit Michael GAY who dominated on the smaller Mansfield ground. A close game for three quarters at Kyabram who can blame bad kicking for their defeat by Echuca. 16 points down at 3/4 time were Kyabram but were defeated by 36 points in the end. Justin DORWARD and Josh EDGAR were named the Murray Bombers best whereas Josh LINTON and David NEWMAN were named as Kyabram's best players. Shepparton Coach Richard WARBURTON was very disappointed with the performance of his team over at Euroa where the Magpies won by 7 goals after being down by 10 points at 3/4 time. Ash HOBBS kicked 5 for the Maggies but 4 of his 5 were kicked within a few minutes of each other in the last quarter to get Euroa up and over the line. That sounds like a match-winning performance! Klay GIOVANNINI and Pat HORSBOROUGH were named as Euroa's best players. Seymour defeated Benalla but not by a lot, final score was the Lions 17.18 (120) to the Saints 15.4 (94). Paul COLBERT kicked 4 for the Lions, Ricky SYMES, as usual, was the leading goal-kicker for Benalla with 4. A real beauty was at Deakin Reserve where the host club the Shepparton United Demons kicked 2 goals 4 behinds in the last quarter to Rochester's 1 goal 3 behinds for the Demons to win by just 5 points. The news from this game is that Jason EAGLE left the ground early in the 2nd quarter after kicking 3 and it is possible he might miss up to a month with a groin complaint. The good news for the Demons is that they kicked enough goals without the big man to record a win over a very good side in Rochy. Former Tiger Nathan GEMMILL along with Sam DAWES were listed as the Demons best players where for the Tigers Sam BRENNAN and Nick KNIGHT were named best.
Five games this Saturday with Mooroopna hosting Kyabram on Sunday. Echuca at home should easily account for the Bears from Shepparton as they seem to way off there game even though they have got some real talent amongst the ranks. Seymour v Mansfield at Kings Park could be the match of the Day - 7th v 8th & no doubt both going hell for leather to play finals this year - Heads Seymour / Tails Mansfield & the penny has come up "Heads" - Seymour to win but just. The Shepparton Swans will be going all out to have a big win over Benalla at Princess Park and by rights should win and possibly win big! Rochester v Tatura over at Rochester will also be a very good game - the Bulldogs will be cock'a hoop with their excellent win over the Swans and the Tigers will be pretty angry about their loss to United - Rochy's bigs in Elliot BOWEN and Guy CAMPBELL v Tat's Bigs in Paul KIRBY and Tim LITTLE plus it is good to see that Ben COSGRIFF was back to his best but the Bulldogs will miss Tommy DURWARD big time when he is down in the Big Smoke - therefor the Tigers at home is the selection. Shepparton United host Euroa who have been missing Matt MILLS and Scott WATSON of late but the good thing for the Magpies is that the youngsters in Klay GIOVANNINI, Marcus VARLEY and Pat HORSBOROUGH have really stepped up to the plate. What could be closer than what a lot of experts predict, the Demons get the nod.
On Sunday at Mooroopna the Cats should get the points over Kyabram but if Paul NEWMAN, Mark ADAMSON and Kayne PETTIFER can get enough of the footy they will give the moggies a bit of head-ache.
Good luck to Tommy DURWARD from Tatura and Jake LORRAINE from Seymour who are representing the V.C.F.L. in the Under 19's game v the Victorian Amatuers on Sunday.
