The Byron Magpies surprised all but their diehard supporters with their 62 point thrashing of the Lismore Swans at Bangalow in round 8 last Saturday. After failing to capitalise on the wind advantage in the first quarter when they only led 3.6 to 3.1, it was felt that the Swans would take control however it was a disciplined Magpies who gained the upper hand with 6.5 to 3.1 for a handy 27 point lead at half time. An even third quarter with the Magpies kicking 4 goals to the Swans 3 left the Lismore side with a chance in the last but Byron were again excellent into the wind running out winners 19.13 to 10.5. This represents a 179 point turnaround from their earlier meeting when Lismore won by 117 points.
Having suffered two big defeats in their last two games Lismore are now two wins behind Tweed Coast Tigers who had a comfortable win over the Demons.
Coolangatta suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of Ballina, going down by 12 points in a tight contest at Ballina Sunday 13.10 to 10.16
