Downlands College have taken out their first ever Northern States Cup but continue to state their status as a powerhouse AFL school on the Darling Downs. Since 2007 Downlands College have taken out the Independent Cup open division twice, the Independent Cup under 15 division twice, finished runner up in both the Independent Cup and Youth Girls Cup runners-up.
With this year’s Northern States Cup, the biggest ever on the Darling Downs with 7 schools nominating from across the region. These included first time entrants Crow’s Nest State School, Centenary Heights State High School, second year contenders Downlands College Griffin’s, Downlands College Demons, Warwick State high School and Harristown State High School, along with Our Lady of the Southern Cross College who have been entering into the Northern States Cup, since it was introduced to AFL on the Darling Downs.
The day kicked off with both Downlands sides against cross town rivals Harristown SHS and Centenary Heights SHS. It was mixed results for Downlands, as the Harristown Hawks thrashed Downlands Demons 16.10 (106) to 0.1 (1), whilst on oval 2 Downlands Griffins gave Centenary Heights SHS a footballing lesson running out victors 13.5 (83) to 1.2 (8). The next group of games saw the boys from Our Lady of the Southern Cross College come up against an unknown side in Crow’s Nest State School. In the game of the day, the Crow’s Nest side ran out 1 point victors overcoming a spirited OLOSCC team 2.2 (14) to 2.1 (13). Warwick State High School had to face the brunt of the Harristown Hawks, who showed early signs of a second Northern States Cup victory. Harristown ran out 6.6 (42) to 0.0 (0) winners. The Downlands Demons and Warwick SHS had to face powerhouse schools OLOSCC and Downlands Griffins. The Demons were overrun by OLOSCC 7.4 (46) to 0.1 (1) and Warwick had to deal with the run and physicality of the Downlands Griffins going down 13.9 (87) to 0.1 (1). Over next few games OLOSCC beat Harristown SHS by 4points, Downlands Demons showed spirit losing by 9points to Warwick SHS, Crow’s Nest had an impressive display against the Downlands Griffins going down by 24points. OLOSCC ran over Centenary Heights SHS by 6goals, Downlands Griffins continued their dominance, running out victors over Harristown by 39points. Centenary Heights SHS was to good for the Downlands Demons and won by 21points. The last game of the day saw the inexperienced Crow’s Nest squad defeat Warwick SHS by 32points.
