ALL WELCOME IN OUR GAME
I think it is fair to say the whole community, let alone the football community, is aware of the Jason Akermanis article last week in the Herald Sun.
Jason, who is well known for his views on a range of matters in life, expressed the view that any players that are homosexual should not come out. Akermanis stated that, “If a player wants to come out then good luck. But I believe the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons”.
One could interpret Akermanis’ view as meaning all Australian Rules players at any level. Throughout country football/netball land the WorkSafe VCFL strongly support any view against homophobia where our football/netball clubs are about a fair go to all and that everyone is welcome and supported in our game.
Football/netball clubs are a “broad church” where people of both genders, all ages, all races and religions, all colours and all sexual orientations are welcome. The only thing we always uphold is that everyone involved with our football and netball (on and off the field) conducts themselves at all times within the rules, policies and infrastructures that provide the foundation for the equal enjoyment and inclusion of all.
There are many pressures in life today and to be “non inclusive” in our sport and related communities needlessly adds further pressure and can lead to increased levels of isolation, depression and suicide that are indeed real challenges throughout society.
Everywhere we turn in our environment we must be welcoming to everyone and ensure they are in a place that supports them rather than alienates them.
Football and netball throughout the WorkSafe VCFL – the broadest church of all!
Enjoy your football and netball this weekend irrespective of who you play on or who you stand next to in the crowd.
