Summerland defeated Darling Downs 18.8 (116) to 12.12 (84) in an entertaining game at Fripp Oval Saturday. The Downs were quickly into stride and had two goals on the board early despite kicking into the wind. With only two training sessions under their belt the Summerland side took some time to settle into their game and ended the quarter 4 points in front 4.1 to 3.5.
The home side got into stride in the second quarter. Strong work by the onballers, King, Clarke & Knoght and a back line that had settled into a pattern gave the forwards chances and despite pushing into the wind they managed 6.2 to 3.2 to lead by 20 points at the long break.
The third quarter was an even contest with the Downs scoring 4 goals against the wind with Summerland getting 5.3 to stretch the lead to 30 points at the last change.
The game had been played at a cracking pace and the tempo slowed in the last quarter with Summerland managing 3.1 to the Downs 2.5.
Travis Clarke, Tim King, Kurt Bullock, Arnold Knight, Billy Walker & Sam Lucas stood out in a team where everyone played an important part. Bill Walker (6 gaols) played as a roving forward pocket and was a great foil for fulforward Doug Perich (4) & King (5).
The side was combination of experienced players with a number of local juniors stepping up in their first year of senior football. The appearance of only four players from the top two sides gave the opportunity to the young players who, along with the seniors, enjoyed the chance to train & play with someone of Shaun Rehn's experience.
The League thanks go to Shaun, his assistant Scott Brooks, Josh Box & Jason Ross (runners) and the members of the Ballina club who officiated as time keepers & Goal Umpires.
