JUNIOR LAKERS COMPETITIVE IN STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Lakers Under 16 Girls finished a creditable fifth in the 2010 State Junior Championships last weekend. The Team faced a tough assignment when relocated to the stronger side of the draw and showed that they were able to match all opponents apart from brief lapses which proved costly against the top city sides.

The Lakers met Eastern Mavericks in their first game and found themselves in a position to win at half-time but then could only score three points in the second half.

They then bounced back to easily defeat South Adelaide 50-24 and Southern Tigers 44- 30.

The Lakers lined up against the highly fancied Sturt in their second game on Saturday.

Sturt, in their first game for the day, started well and led the Lakers by a double figure margin. Not to be denied, the Lakers worked hard to level the scores in the final minutes but Sturt then steadied and went on to win 38-44. This was a commendable effort against a class side which trains and plays together throughout the season. This result saw the Lakers third in their pool. On Sunday they showed that they were somewhat unlucky in not making the finals by defeating Woodville and finishing fifth overall in the State division. Members of the team were Emily Stafford, Sam Loughhead, Morgan Amy, Alycia Close, Kelly Lockwood, Brianna Walters, Malinda Markiewicz and Danika Jolley.

Mount Gambier and State junior, Georgia Green is a member of the Under 16 Girls Champion team, Eastern Mavericks which defeated Forestville 48-40 in the title match.
