First and Foremost - THIS IS IMPORTANT !!!!!!! The Goulburn Valley Football League are playing the Ovens and Murray Football League in the Under 18's and in the Seniors this Saturday, 22nd May up at the Lavington Sports Oval which is just North of Albury. It is a terrific ground with excellent spectator facilities and viewing points. The weather is tipped to be fine and sunny with a top temperature of 19. Probably perfect conditions for footy. From Shepparton to Lavington, give yourself a good two and a half hours to get up there. From Shepp. the ground is 180k away - have a stop and a stretch at Glenrowan - the road/highway is in excellent condition. We need to see as much gold and purple as possible & hear plenty of support for our boys. The Under 18 game is scheduled to start at 2:30pm and the the Senior game to start at 5pm. CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to all the players who have made themselves available to represent the League. When we know the teams they will be published in our web-site.
Summaries of Round 6 :- The big news from the this round centered around our reigning Morrison Medalist playing alongside a former Brownlow medalist over at the big Rochester ground. Brian DURBRIDGE is our Medalist with the Shepparton Swans - Shane WOEWODIN is the Brownlow medalist who played alongside Adem YZE, Nathan BROWN and Russell ROBERTSON at Melbourne. Woey is the Coach of the East Fremantle team who play in the W.A.F.L. who just happened to have the bye last week-end over in Perth and who has been undertaking studies in Melbourne which could help his goal in becoming an A.F.L. coach down the track. Shane has been to Shepparton before when Shepparton has hosted the Australian Country Championships. It will be interesting to see what develops from here and if Shane plays the required three senior games to be eligible for finals. A current similair situation exists where Katandra lad David TEAGUE now and again returns home to play for his beloved Kats when not tied up with coaching the Northern Bullants down in Melbourne. Interesting is'nt it? From all reports the Brownlow medalist went o.k. but did not set the world on fire, no goals & was not named in the best. However, Robbo slotted 10 and was named 2nd best player with Brian DURBRIDGE - Elliot BOWEN kicked 5 for the Tige's & hopefully will be a team-mate of "Durbs" this Saturday up at Lavington. The Swans kicked 10 goals straight in the last quarter to win by 4 goals - Rochy kicked 2 goals 2 behinds in the last so that is really a great win by the Swans. Another interesting game was at Tatura where the Bulldogs nearly got up to get the 4 points from Mooroopna after trailing all day - down by 3 goals at 3/4 time they caught up a bit but not enough to go down by 5 points. The Cats were all over the park with their goal-kicking having kicked 14 goals 24 behinds for the day. Bad kicking can lose games. Craig WHELAN kicked 4, Jordon SOUTER got 3 and was named the Cats best player. Paul KIRBY kicked 4 for the Dogs and was named in the best along with Chris RYAN and Brendan KEAST. The Shepp United Demons defeated the Seymour Lions by 41 points at Deakin Reserve in a scrappy affair that did not reach any great heights. Jason EAGLE kicked 7 majors and was ably supportd by Ryan NORMINGTON who got 3 and Peter RALPH kicked 2 in their total of 17 goals. Matty RENDINA is going through a real purple spot to be United's best player again. The COLBERT boys were restricted to 3 goals between them. Echuca could be the real deal - they had a big win over Benalla at Benalla by winning by 116 points and with half the team kicking their 24 goals and all playing well. Brendan STEVENS as always, tried his heart out and was named his team's best but will miss out next game against the Cats as he has taken the set penalty of one match after being reported for charging Matthew POLLOCK. The Mansfield Eagles recorded a 44 point victory over Shepparton up in the High Country with Jimmy HERRIDGE back in town kicking 5 and being named his teams best player. The helmeted David DANIEL and the CRAWFORD boys were listed as the Bears best. The Kyabram Bombers had a monster win over the depleted Magpies at Euroa - Ky kicked 29 goals 20 behinds to Euroa's 4 goals 8. 12 Bombers kicked goals, with Paul NEWMAN and Simon SEDDON both getting 6, Kayne PETTIFER kicked 5. Lets hope these three Bombers are playing for the GV this Saturday and can repeat last Saturday's performance. Congratulations to Paul NEWMAN who has been appointed Captain of our Representive team again which is fantastic. Did you know that Paul's grandfather Dave NEWMAN also captained the GV in rep games back in the 1950's?
Please make an effort to get up to Lavington this Saturday - shout yourself a good day out - we need your support to help brng home to bacon. The O & M are a proud League and will do thier best to hold onto their rating as No. 1 in the V.C.F.L. If we knock them off, won't it be nice to be able to say we are No. 1 in the V.C.F.L. and boy oh boy, don't we need some good after all the negative stuff we have had to start the year off. Go Go Go the Mighty GV!
