South East Coast Basketball Winter Season Underway.

South East Coast Basketball Winter Season Underway.

Early indications suggest that the winter season of the South Coast Basketball competitions will be of comparable standard and command a similar level of interest of previous seasons.

Reigning premier, Roos-Lakers, in not nominating this season gives a seven team competition in the Men’s division. The Roos Club and its talented juniors are to be commended on competing in the Women’s division even though they would love to add some experience to their squad. This commitment means that the Women’s division continues to comprise a six team competition.

After two rounds of the Men’s 14 regulation rounds Bulldogs appear to be asserting themselves as a measuring stick; they defeated Cougars by two in the opening round and last Wednesday accounted for Roos who have since been strengthened by the inclusion of Pioneer Josh Jenkins.

Panthers-Wizards showed that they are determined to again see finals action by outclassing Saints by 53 points last week after Saints had defeated under-manned Cats by 10 in the opening round. Cougars followed up their narrow 2 point loss to Bulldogs with a strong win over Cats who have Pioneer Belal Abiad suiting up each week.

Panthers scored a big win over Roos in week 1 and had the bye in round 2.

Pioneers’ trio Josh Jenkins, Dallas Jeffree and Kurt Russell were among the top scorers. They are joined by Simon Berkefeld looking to have another big season, Kyle Howe-Tipene and Chris Mason.

This week Panthers come off a bye to play Bulldogs. Panthers-Wizards meet Cougars which is bound to feature a spirited contest between Chris Mason and Dallas Jeffree.

Roos travel to Millicent to play Cats in the remaining game while Saints have the bye.

Already two undefeated teams, Cougars and Cats, appear to be setting standards in the Women’s competition. Both teams scored big wins on the opening night and have maintained their winning streak so far. Cats in particular are averaging around 70 points per game reflecting their depth in potential scorers. Kate Seebohm, Sarah Pretty and Jasmine Howe are three such players.

Three other teams, Bulldogs, Panthers and Saints each have recorded one win. This week Panthers travel to Millicent to take on Saints in which the outcome will depend on the impact of Brianna Reilly and Laura Schultz for Saints as opposed to that of Rebecca Trench and Panthers’ talented juniors.

Roos’ improving young guns take on Bulldogs who are being well led by Sara Chapple.
