In perfect conditions at Sea Lake, Beulah celebrated Brad Moore’s 250th with a hard fought victory and maintaining their undefeated record.
The first quarter belonged to the home team with the Tigers leading by 5 points at the first change. Ryan Dowdy was causing headaches for the Blues defence and Bill Barry’s run off half back was creative. For the Blues it was Tyler Lehman who was breaking the lines.
The second quarter saw some free kicks and 50 metre penalties in front of goal to Beulah as they overtook the Tigers to lead by 9 points at the main break. Clayton Shannon was strong in the Blues backline, whilst Taylor Hannig was doing the same for the Tigers.
The arm wrestle continued in the second half but it was the Blues who were able to capitalise and score more frequently than the Tigers kicking 8 goals to 5 and taking the win by 26 points.
For Beulah, Jarrod Combe kicked a couple of goals late to end with a bag of 6, he was assisted by Kim Hallam with 3. For the Tigers Ryan Dowdy played a lone hand up forward finishing with 7. Tyler Lehman, Rory Shannon and Clayton Shannon were named best for Beulah and the better Tiger players included Bill Barry, Ryan Dowdy and Joel Lloyd.
Walpeup Underbool made the trip across to Woomelang to do battle with the Cats and what a great day for football it was with the sun shining and grass hoppers hopping.
The Woomelang Lascelles Senior side was full of confidence after the Reserves had notched up the Clubs’ first win of the 2010 season but they were soon brought back to earth as it was Walpeup Underbool who came out firing, keen to get their first Senior win. The Roos got the jump on the Cats and piled on 9 goals in the first quarter and the forward line was looking dangerous with Matt Brown being a focal point.
The Cats came out in the second quarter and slowed down Walpeup Underbool’s attack on goals restricting them to 2 goals for the term and reducing the margin slightly going into the long break. Tony Mudge was battling hard for Woomelang Lascelles even though he was carrying an injury and new recruit Chris Foott, who played his first game for the Cats, was showing his potential.
In the second half the Roos ran away with the game. Walpeup Underbool’s big man, Mick Pole was having a good game in the ruck and the running players of Anthony Wisneske, Scott Munro and Travis Latta were getting plenty of the ball and feeding it into forward line where Matt Brown and Simon Markham were able to convert.
Woomelang Lascelles youngster Trent Donnon played in several positions throughout the game and played well, as did Matt Symes and Josh Templeton. Cat’s 15 year old Brody Adcock played his first senior game after playing a full game in the Under 16's and was also impressive kicking 2 goals.
Jeparit Rainbow came up against Ouyen United at Blackburn Park, Ouyen. The first quarter ended with scores all tied up and that was a true indication of the level of intensity in a high standard game, one where the ball went up and down the ground with sustained passages of fast, clean football. Players were leading well, providing targets and opening up play in both forward lines, particularly the Jeparit/Rainbow forward line and they looked like they might hold the lead at the first break. Peter Weir was providing a target and Ashley Clugston and Justin Chilver were prominent, but just when you thought Jeparit/Rainbow might break away, Ouyen United lifted and their straight kicking for goal, that was going to desert them later in the game, enabled the Demons to catch up go into the first break on even terms.
Ouyen United lifted their play to another level in the second quarter and by the time Jeparit/Rainbow kicked their first goal for the quarter at the 15 minute mark, Ouyen United had raced to a five goal lead. In this quarter the Demons maintained their intensity, but improved the accuracy of their kicking around the ground, and they held more of their overhead marks. Ouyen United’s Jason Hahnel provided two highlights of the quarter, one a punch forward from the wing that lead to a goal and the other a tackle at half back that freed up the ball enabling the Demons to run the ball down the ground deep into their forward line. Players such as Glenn Joyce, Marc Hahnel and Ben Gregg were dominating and giving plenty of the ball to the Ouyen United forwards Ash Connick and Rob Miller.
At the beginning of the second half, Jeparit/Rainbow was providing a good contest and had some solid players in Luke Werner and Michael Eckermann. The whole team seemed to lift their intensity half way through this quarter, but even though they were showing real resistance, goals for the Lakers were hard to come by and it was at this time that the Ouyen United backline took complete control. Demon Jarrod Munro was getting on top, marking well, putting his body in and mopping up cleanly anything that came his way; he seemed to always have plenty of time and combined well with the other backmen in Keiran O’Shannessey, Brenton Jardine and Adam O’Callaghan.
Heath and Ashley Clugston continued their good play for Jeparit/Rainbow and the first part of the final quarter was even with Ouyen United scoring points when goals would have seen them really dominate. Their defence, Jarrod Munro had the ball on a string, continued to play well and by continually feeding the ball forward, goals came late in the day so that Ouyen United were able to run out comfortable winners and looking forward to a testing encounter at Beulah next week. This was a good game for the spectators to watch, as the whole oval was used, keeping play open for the most part and making for a contest played at a rapid pace.
