In perfect conditions, Walpeup Underbool won the toss and kicked to the highway end. Beulah wasted no time in getting their first goal.
Tim Vallance started well for Walpeup Underbool and after a down field kick, Matt Brown evened up the score. Sam Liston, who had started well for Beulah, roved the ball from half forward and kicked a running goal for the Blues. Beulah started to lift as the quarter went on with Jarred Combe and Jake Percy both kicking goals. But the Roos responded well with Matt Palmer and Greg Althouse kicking goals bringing the margin back to 7 points at quarter time. Best for Beulah wasDale Shannon and Scott Smith and for Walpeup Underbool, Tim Vallance and Anthony Wisneske.
A frantic pace started the second quarter with both teams finding it hard to score goals. Jake Percy opened up with the first goals nailing it on his left. An academy award by Stephen Saunders couldn’t buy a free kick from umpire Summerhayes, but a great snap fromDale Shannon from the boundary brought the Beulah crowd alive. An altercation saw two players sent from the ground as Shannon received a 50 and a goal. Discipline from both sides seemed to disappear as the half time siren sounded with Beulah 26 points ahead.
After a beer and pie at half time the footy was back on. The half started with both teams kicking points. Beulah steadied with a goal five minutes into the quarter as the Roos struggled to find an avenue to goal. A miraculous goal of the day to Northern Territory lad, Greg Althouse, kept the Walpeup Underbool side in touch. The Beulah boys answered quickly with a goal to Jarred Combe and 3 more goals to the Blues busted the game right open as that certain lady started to hum a few bars!! At the end of the 3rd quarter Beulah were up by 65 points and looking ominous.
After some excellent tackles in the last quarter by the Roos, it was Beulah who scored the opening goal through Sam Liston who had played well all day. Jim Wakefield took Jake Percy out of the game as the Roos kicked two through Darren Latta to give the home team a sniff. Beulah however had built a good enough lead to play the game out and win by 9 goals.
5 goals to Sam Liston and a great game by Brad Shannon showed that the Blues are the benchmark of the Speed Field Days Mallee Football League. The Roos showed glimpses of what they can do and with players to return to the line up should improve.
