After suffering a one point loss to Sturt last week, Forestville’s women are likely to be in a merciless mood.

The 2010 version of the Lady Eagles is strikingly similar to its 2009 mosquito fleet (if anything, Forestville are slightly shorter than last year with Kelsey Ireland and Kate Harrison in for Dee Ranford and Georgia Minear) and until Megan Kermond returns from US college duties, will probably continue to start 5 players who could all be guards at other clubs.

This has hardly hurt them – in fact their conversion from defence to offence poses a difficult problem for every opponent, and opposition teams are almost forced to start their backcourt coverage before they even shoot the ball. Against Sturt, Forestville’s transition offence was blistering early, with Mia Newley making long and early outlet passes that resulted in 3 on 2 and 2 on 1 situations, and had Forestville converted on their layups, the game could have been put out of Sturt’s reach. However, the final result tells a different story, with Forestville going through patches where they were force to play a half court game, and struggling to score against the taller Sturt defence.

6’2” Amber Land has been the best for Centrals this season, averaging double figure points and rebounds. A number of others have chipped in from game to game, the most consistent being Dayna Roberts whose 17 against Eastern included 4 of 8 from the three point line. Point guard Elizabeth Oermann has also performed well against better opponents this year, scoring 16 against Norwood and 10 against West, and Fiona Perso has been the next best rebounder after Land.

Centrals’ best chance to be competitive is to do their best to make this a half-court game, which will be no easy task given the speed of Forestville’s guards. Centrals aren’t tall enough to punish Forestville inside but 6’2” Amber Land should have a good matchup with Newley and may be able to score around the basket, provided her team mates can penetrate the Eagles defence and get her the ball.

Failing that, it may be a tough night for Centrals, as Forestville look to make amends for last week as they head into a two week break.
