A LATE Flurry if goals from Joel Kreeck helped Centrals Trinity Beach surge to a 12 point win over the Manunda Hawks at Crathern Oval on Saturday.
One of the smallest players in the AFL Cairns, Kreeck used his cunning in the final quarter to boot three consecutive majors and set up the 14.11(95) to 12.11(85) victory.
Bulldogs coach Mick Seymour said the nuggetty goal sneak was one of his side’s most consistent performers.
“He’s a very under-rated player,” he said. “There’s not much of him but he’s very skilful and a tough little bugger”
“But I also thought Gareth Oughton was outstanding for us. He really stood up and got some important goals and made some important clearances when it counted.”
While the Bulldogs celebrated their win with claps and back slaps, a disappointed Hawks were left to rue their wastefulness as they trudged of the field.
Holding a five point lead at three quarter time, the Hawks had many set shots in the last term but could not guide any between the big sticks.
It was a different situation in the first term.
Youngster Dwayne Weetra was un-stoppable for the Hawks, booting four goals on the back of impressive work from former Crathern Medallist Willy Alick and ruckman Luke Powell.
The Bulldogs were the wasteful team early, kicking five behinds in the opening quarter to trail by 14 points at the first change.
Seymour said his team did not get the match ups it wanted in the opening term.
So I think we still have a lot of settling down to do. A lot of this group haven’t played together and we have a fair turnover of players from last year,”
Hawks coach Paul Griffiths said his side was below its best after beating reigning premiers Cairns Saints in the first round.
“I thought we played pretty ordinary for most of the day and I was pretty much into the boys at every break,” he said.
