Bay of Plenty and Canterbury had the same amount of points after the early rounds and nothing separated in the Final either. Bay of Plenty got the opening score through Toia Tiwha, but it didn’t take long for Canterbury to get their first try through Courtney Chapman and it was try-for-try for the rest of the half.
Both teams were out to attack and entertain, and the crowd got into the game as quality play produced some excellent tries. Canterbury lead by 1 as the halftime hooter sounded, but Bay of Plenty showed enough for it to be anyone’s game.
The second half was more of the same and when Sean McKain from Bay of Plenty nabbed an intercept try the game was in their grasp. Canterbury had other ideas though and scored a try of their own to regain the lead and managed to hold on as the clock ticked down.
Bay kept coming, and tensions were high across the paddock, but Canterbury held on for a 5-4 victory.
