The 2010 AFL Darling Downs season is set to launch with an exciting new look following confirmation three additional teams will join the competition. Former senior teams Dalby and Lockyer Valley are set to rejoin the region's premiership race where they will be joined by Highfields which ventures into the senior competition this year for the first time.
The 2010 club injection boosts the competition to 9 teams in a coup for Queensland country AFL administrators. Dalby has performed strongly at junior level in recent years and its return to the senior competition comes after a two-year absence. Lockyer Valley has been on the sidelines for 12years but is promising to return healthy 2010 senior and junior numbers. Highfields have been a part of junior AFL competitions and their emergence as a senior entity is a reflection of the growth north of Toowoomba.
AFLDD development manager Keith Webb said the competition expansion brings with it many pluses for the code in the region.
"The feelers went out at the end of last year seeking interest in expanding the competition and we're delighted with the response," Webb said. "The addition of three clubs is tremendous news for the sport in our area.
The 2010 AFL Darling Down premiership begins on March 27 with a meeting of reigning premiers Coolaroo and last year's beaten grand finalists South Toowoomba.
