The new junior AFL club at Rochedale has received a major boost with a donation of $10,205 from the Brisbane Lions.
The money, the Lionsâ share of the proceeds from the annual âThree Codes Lunchâ held earlier this year in conjunction with the Brisbane Broncos and the Queensland Reds, will go towards building key structures such as an equipment storage shed, shade sails and goal posts.
This comes after the new club adopted the name âRavensâ and established a blue and yellow jumper design (pictured) as they push towards a formal launch early next year.
Lions CEO Michael Bowers, noting the expense of establishing a new junior club, said the AFL club was keen to support the development of grassroots football, and was excited to do so âin our own backyardâ.
"Perhaps another Jonathan Brown, Luke Power, Simon Black or Jamie Charman will come from the Rochedale Ravens â if and when that happens the Lions will be proud to have played a part,â Bowers said today as he confirmed the sizeable donation.
The Rochedale JAFC held their first Annual General Meeting on 23 November to inaugurate the new club with an interim committee of nine volunteers who are working on their constitution, start-up budget and operations.
They will field teams in the Brisbane Juniors competition next year from U8s to U11s and will be heavily involved with three local schools that each have representation on the interim committee - Rochedale State School, Rochedale South State School and the St Peter's Catholic Primary School.
Work is already well underway on the club's oval which will be shared with the Kuraby Cricket Club.
