GOLD MEDALS FOR JUNIOR BASKETBALLERS.
Four of Mount Gambier’s talented Under 15 basketballers came home from Port Macquarie with gold medals as members of the SA Country team which won their age division in the 2010 Pacific Coast Slam.
Mount Gambier members of the team were Morgan Amy, Georgia Green, Malinda Markiewicz and Brianna Walters. The SA Country Under 15 team finished the Tournament with their record in tact, scoring wins over teams from NSW regional, country and metropolitan areas, Victoria Country and New Zealand.
Strengths of their wins included their team work, persistence and composure when under pressure. In the Gold Medal game against NSW Waratahs SA Country struggled to score consistently early in the game and led 14-9 at the first break. NSW levelled the scores at half-time, 20 apiece. They then led by 4 at the start of the final quarter but were headed by three as the match drew to a close. Not to be denied SA Country dug deep and relied on a big team effort to regain the lead and finish strongly for a 56-42 win.
Coach David Todd commented on the natural athletic talents of the Lakers players, praised their effective teamwork and commended them on their application in preparing for the Tournament.
