Fifteen of Mount Gambier’s best junior basketballers head off to Port Macquarie and Albury later this week to compete in the 2010 Pacific Coast Slam and Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup.

The Slam conducts competitions for the Under 15 and 17 age groups while the Cup covers the Under 14, 16 and 18 age groups. Both the Cup and Slam focus on development; the priority being participation with winning a bonus. Along with the basketball competitions there are Development Programs for referees and coaches incorporated into the week long events. Mount Gambier referee Ali Burch is a member of the SA Country Referees’ panel.  

The local squad of 15 has been working hard under the watchful eye of Development Officer Trevor Semmens over the past three weeks.

Four Mount Gambier players, Morgan Amy, Georgia Green, Malinda Markiewicz and Brianna Walters are members of the SA Country Under 15 Women’s team competing in the Slam, which tips off on Friday January 15th at the Port Macquarie Sports Stadium.

The finals series will be played on Wednesday January 18th.

Former Mount Gambier Development Officer David Todd is Coach of this team and

Peter Sachert is a Team Manager in the SA Country contingent.

Trevor Semmens is Head Coach for the SA Country Under 16 Girls’ squad and Andrew Lee is an Assistant Coach for of one of the Under 14 Boys’ teams traveling to Albury.

The Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup begins with the Opening Ceremony at Wodonga on Monday January 16th, followed by the first round of games. matches continue through the week The Cup winds up on Saturday January 23rd with Finals and the Closing Ceremony.  

Local members of “Cup” teams are as follows: Under 14 Boys Sam Stafford, Under 14 Girls Danika Jolley, Under 16 Boys Matt Parslow, Matt Markiewicz and Jackson Trappett, Under 16 Girls Emily Stafford, Samantha Loughhead and Brianna Falland, Under 18 Boys Jak Ryan, Under 18 Girls Abby Loughhead and Maddi Wilson.

Teams from all over Australia and New Zealand compete in these Junior Tournaments.

Country and metropolitan teams from NSW, Country SA and Victoria, Queensland North and South, New Zealand and the North Coast All Stars will be competing in the Pacific Coast Slam.

Two teams will compete in each “Cup” age group from Country Cup foundation states Country Victoria, NSW and SA, 120 players in each group. New Zealand will also field a full complement of teams. WA Country has nominated in Under 14 and 16 divisions while Tasmania returns to the Cup after a lengthy break in the Under 14 and 16 age groups.     

 Local Albury and Wodonga players have competed in the Cup since its inception and will continue as members of Albury/Wodonga teams in 2010.
