After a 15 year absence from the AFL Darling Downs Premiership season, the Lockyer Valley are looking at a much anticipated come back, to the 2010 Allied Pickford Cup. Lockyer Valley recruiting officer Tony Bowers, has had over 17players put their hand up for a shot at forming the new club, but this isn’t enough as the club would require 30plus players to part take in the AFLDD season. With only 6 current ‘A’ Grade teams in the AFL Darling Downs senior league, the Lockyer Valley would be a welcome addition to the League. They won’t be the only new senior club coming into the mix for 2010 season Highfields Lions and Dalby Swans are also looking at joining the 6 other existing senior clubs. This will yet again improve the competition not only in the Darling Downs region but make Australian Rules even more popular and stronger in Queensland.
The Lockyer Valley Football Club isn’t just looking for Senior players, they are looking for Juniors in the age groups of Under 8,10,12,14,16 and a Masters side(this is for 35+), also this just not for the boys, girls are more then welcome to join the club and the always exciting game of AFL.
This is a huge task to start a new club, but Recruiting Officer Tony Bowers and AFL Queensland Development Manager Keith Webb have set a goal to have the club up and running by the 2010 AFL Darling Downs season. There has been heaps of support from the region with Mr. Gary Turner who writes for the Gatton Star for the Country Music section throwing his full support behind the venture. Recruiting Officer Tony Bowers has also met with Mr. Ashley Furner who is a former Development Officer from Victoria who is now a resident of the region and is ready to get this club up and running. He is devoted to lend a hand wherever he can, Mr. Furner is also a level 2 qualified coach, he is not only just an ideal asset for getting this club up running but also would be very handy for the local AFL Darling Downs league.
The major part of setting up the Lockyer Valley Football Club is to have a executive committee of volunteers and anyone that is willing to help, to start making decisions and sponsors for the 2010 season. If you are interested the Lockyer Valley Demons will be holding a Meet and Greet session on Sunday 22nd November at the Gatton Sports Ground from 10:00am until after lunch, come along with the whole family enjoy a fun day out, with activities for the kids and a sausage sizzle.
